Wallplay has been pleased to host Lance de los Reyes’ newest series, Messages From Ghosts. De los Reyes is prolific for creating enigmatic bodies of work imbued with spiritual symbology across media. For his newest series, the artist took possession of both outdoor and indoor space in Manhattan’s Seaport District.
Lance de los Reyes recognizes that an artist’s creative contributions are often representative of an attempt to express their individual perspective, which is in turn worshipped by the art community. Separating himself from biographical veneration, Messages From Ghosts instead treats the artist as conduit, receiving messages and imagery from artists who have entered the afterlife, translated through painting, sculpture, and drawing within a vacant former Abercrombie and Fitch. As visitors entered the Seaport, they were greeted by unearthly, futuristic hieroglyphic characters in vinyl, created from De los Reye’s own drawings. Each window beckoned viewers into the caverns of the uncanny void that is New York’s post-retail landscape.
The interior was taken over by large, grommeted unstretched canvases, laced with codified shapes, in relationship with deceased artist accounts from the beyond. Paintings were placed in dialogue with sculpture in primary shades, evoking various artists of influence that departed the Earth in the 21st century.
After the 15th of November, the works will be available for private viewings on site by appointment only until Mid-December.
